The Intersection of Substance Use and Grief

Shannan Sproull, Programs Manager - Substance Use Disorder Connect

Rosie Ayers, Coordinator - Project Tomorrow Montana

with United Way of Missoula County

A brief educational presentation to inform participants of how substance use and grief are often connected. We will examine three ways that substance use and grief intersect: (a) those who experience a loss and turn to substances as a coping mechanism; (b) those family and friends who experience a loss resulting from a loved one that died from a substance-related issue, and (c) how substance use is often associated with suicide specifically and what can we do about it. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion.
