The Intersection of Substance Use and Grief

Shannan Sproull, Programs Manager - Substance Use Disorder Connect

Rosie Ayers, Coordinator - Project Tomorrow Montana

with United Way of Missoula County

A brief educational presentation to inform participants of how substance use and grief are often connected. We will examine three ways that substance use and grief intersect: (a) those who experience a loss and turn to substances as a coping mechanism; (b) those family and friends who experience a loss resulting from a loved one that died from a substance-related issue, and (c) how substance use is often associated with suicide specifically and what can we do about it. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion.

2:15-3:45pm MDT

Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention

Tracy Rassley, Programs Director - American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Montana Chapter

Katie Levine, Executive Director - American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Montana Chapter

Talk Saves Lives is AFSP’s standardized education program that provides participants with a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives.

4:00-5:00pm MDT

Pathways to Healing

This presentation by Linda Goldman, MS, FT, will provide needed tools for enabling professionals and all caring adults to recognize the stresses associated with environmental challenges and help young people externalize the impact of these challenges. By providing clear language for a meaningful dialogue, acknowledging children’s voices, separating fact from fiction about climate issues, encouraging participation in activities for the planet,  creating tools to reduce stress, highlighting inspirational role models and organizations — we can ultimately transform anxiety and grief and loss into hope, resilience, and a shared involvement with our children. This live webcast will be followed by a panel of community organizations, moderated by Louise Economides, PhD, MA.
