Many people identify feeling isolated amidst grief. Simultaneously, it can seem that our usual repertoire of coping skills falls short. Groups can offer a positive support network with opportunities to learn and practice constructive outlets for a range of emotions. This interactive workshop with Tina Barrett, EdD, LCPC, explores the benefits of group interventions for youth and adults who are grieving the death of a family member or other types of losses. We will outline models of grief and trauma care related to group work, and discuss tools and ideas for coordinating and facilitating grief support groups, including special considerations for grief after suicide. Considerations for coordination and implementation as well as common challenges in groups will be addressed.

By providing clear language for a meaningful dialogue, acknowledging children’s voices, separating fact from fiction about climate issues, encouraging participation in activities for the planet,  creating tools to reduce stress, highlighting inspirational role models and organizations — we can ultimately transform anxiety and grief and loss into hope, resilience, and a shared involvement with our children. NACG Conference: Supporting Children & Families Following an Overdose Death

The National Alliance for Children’s Grief will host an annual Conference & Webcast on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. This popular event will this year feature Eleanor Hadley, MS and Litsa Williams, MA, LCSW-C, two thought leaders from the field of childhood bereavement & authors of What’s Your Grief? Both the speakers and topic will appeal to a diverse audience, including professionals and volunteers in the field of funeral service, hospice care, health care, education, mental health, child welfare, and bereavement support.

Our topic for this upcoming conference is “Supporting Children and Families Following an Overdose Death.” Grief is the normal and natural reaction to any significant loss, whether that is a bereavement loss or a non-death loss. The opioid epidemic continues to surge in the US, with overdose deaths reaching 107,000 in 2021, a record in the US and an increase of nearly 20% over the previous annual high. Overdose deaths can complicate the grief experience and create important considerations when supporting them. Our speakers will explore ways we can stabilize and strengthen those grieving an overdose death as they integrate their losses into their lives.

Through UM Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (MOLLI), TGRC presents: On Grief & Healing: A Discussion About Loss.

Mondays, April 5, 12, and 19, 1:00-2:30pm

With any change comes loss, and when we experience loss, we grieve. Grief is a natural and universal, albeit complex, part of the human experience. We are all touched by loss and respond in unique ways. Together we’ll explore the many ways in which we experience change and loss in our daily lives – from life changes due to COVID-19, to divorce, to death of loved ones. The seminar will share research on the grief experience, discuss how to have conversations about grief, and offer ideas for adapting to loss. Participants will leave with both practical tools for stabilizing and strengthening ourselves and others throughout grief as well as increased comfort talking about end-of-life, grief, and life after loss.

$30 to register through MOLLI

Grief Institute 2021

with Tina Barrett, EdD, LCPC, Executive Director, TGRC

MT BBH and OPI CEs Available (1hr)

Filling your metaphorical cup during times of crisis is easier said than done. The spark that draws us to our work can begin to dim when faced with daily pressures and the mounting stress among our teams. Workplace dynamics, time pressures, personal stressors, and repeated immersion in tough stories can take a toll. What tools keep difficult conversations constructive and help us to productively manage the expressed anger and stress of others? How can we continually regenerate ourselves, interact in ever-more effective ways, and set up systems for healthy workplaces? Too often, workplace wellness oversimplifies the complexity of systems.

Together we’ll explore practical strategies related to individual employees, collegial dynamics, and larger work cultures/structures – with the goal of enhancing well-being and tools to address trauma and chronic stress. May you leave feeling empowered with tools to help you, your colleagues, and your employees keep on keeping on.
